Frequently Asked Questions

What do you mean by "soul food canon?"
By “soul food canon,” I am referring to the collection of dishes commonly associated with soul food — not necessarily items made in restaurants, but the dishes that regular people cook, either for everyday meals or on special occasions.
-
Why are you doing this?
short answer: I love soul food & want more of it.
longer answer: soul food etc combines 3 of my long-time interests:
● food
● how ideas & culture spread
● community building
-
Is this about “elevating” soul food?
Absolutely not. Soul food does not need to be “elevated.” It is amazing as it is, which is why there should be more of it.
-
Is the goal to make soul food healthier?
That is not the explicit focus of this project; however, healthy dishes are definitely welcome.
-
Is this a commercial venture?
NO. This is a labor of love and collective cultural enrichment.
-
Why not just focus on purely African dishes?
While certainly a reflection of the African culinary diaspora, soul food is its own cuisine distinct from African cuisines.
